'84, '86 or '87?

Post by AdamH » Sun Feb 21, 2010 11:09 pm

I'm sure it's been covered somewhere, but does anyone know the actual release dates of this classic version? I've heard '84, '86 and an '87 version...? Obviously Larry would/should know...

The First Edition was released in 1984. This was followed by the Second Edition in 1986, which had some significant rules changes. In 1991, a set of clarifications was added to the rules. Finally, the CD-ROM was released in 1997, which contained the Third Edition rules.

All of these were different editions of the Classic (Milton Bradley) game, having the same physical components and only being different in certain rules. Versions by other publishers (Nova Games in 1981 and Avalon Hill in 2004 and 2009), have completely different physical components as well as rules.

Ah, that clears it up. I was confused as some of my game components have 1984 printed on them, rules are '86 and rules clarifications are '91. Thanks Krieghund!

The board game dates are correct. There were 2 video games released of the A&A: Classic board game. Axis & Allies CD video game (1998) and Axis & Allies: Iron Blitz CD video game (1999). The 2nd version, A&A: Iron Blitz CD has marines, destroyers, paratroopers and kamakazis. The video games have many bugs. There are game patches posted on various A&A websites.

There is also a newer version of the video game, Axis & Alles: RTS CD video game (2004) and Axis & Allies: RTS Collector's Edition CD video game (2006). The RTS version has several tactical battlefield scenarios.
