You would use the number of the hit to decide which unit is destroyed. It would work as follows:
On a roll of 1 the lowest cost unit would be destroyed.
On a roll of 2 the second lowest cost unit would be destroyed.
On a roll of 3 the third lowest cost unit would be destroyed.
On a roll of 4 the fourth lowest cost unit would be destroyed.
If there is only 1 type of unit obviously they will absorb all hits.
If there are only 2 units (2,3 or 4 hits the highest cost unit)
If there are only 3 units (3 or 4 hits the highest cost unit)
If there are 5 types of units (the highest cost unit is unhittable until another type of unit is eliminated)
Let's say 4 infantry and 2 tanks were attacking 2 infantry 1 artillery and 1 fighter plane.
The attackers fire:
The four infantry roll 1, 3, 4, 6 (1 hit on a roll of 1) So one of the defending infantry is destroyed.
The two tanks roll 3, 5 (1 hit on a roll of 3) So the defending fighter is destroyed.
The defenders fire back:
The two infantry roll 2, 3 (1 hit on a roll of 2) So one attacking tank is destroyed.
The artillery rolls a 4 (no hits)
The fighter plane rolls a 4 (1 hit on a roll of 4) So another attacking tank is destroyed.
(Wow, must have been Italian tanks)
After one round the battle is now between:
Attackers: 4 infantry
Defenders: 1 infantry and 1 artillery
Any feedback about this idea would be appreciated.
