Submarine First Strike

Post by timerover51 » Tue Aug 08, 2017 6:50 pm

I had an interesting question come up in a game of Pacific, 1st Edition (with the Red Japanese ships). The US player was looking at forming "wolf packs" of submarines, and wanted to know if a single destroyer could block a first strike by 4 submarines. After giving the matter some though, I ruled that a destroyer could block the "first strike" of one submarine, but no more than that. If 4 submarines attacked in a sea zone, it would take 4 destroyers to block all "first strikes".

Per the official rules, one destroyer is enough to prevent any number of subs from getting a first strike. Your ruling does make for an interesting house rule, though.

Hmmm, given what I know about WW2 ASW, especially Japan, allowing one destroyer to block an unlimited number of submarine first strikes seems a bit much. One destroyer blocking one sub makes for good reasons to build submarines and also force the opposition to build destroyers, or take a lot of losses with no return fire.
