My dad was in the Signal Corps in the Pacific. Served from '39-'46.

He was stationed in Australia and New Guinea for a while, I know, and after the war spent some time in Japan.

He told me that he got his Signal Corps tattoo while stationed in New Guinea on a three day pass (nothing to do there but drink local brew and get tattooed, I suppose...). Busted from Sgt. to Private for that one (the Japanese, if they caught him, would try to get the codes from him), but he eventually worked his way up to Staff Sgt. again.

Other than that, I only know about the stories that he'd tell a 5-year-old; eating chocolate-covered snake, having a pet monkey, and the like.
