Hay Jason,
Ya gotta love Dottie! Looks like she’s rolling her own cigarettes in one of the photos...

Not that I know anything special or different from you, but I don’t think that yellow paper is a calendar. Could it be the Japanese war bond that the news paper article mentions?

Thanks for sharing these precious collection of photos with us.

Larry! Great to see you!

Yeah totally, like month 500 day 1000? It couldn't be a calender hehe, maybe some kind of crazy ambitious IPC chart, but their plans were thoroughly thwarted by your dad and my grandpa, and all the other brave service men and women who answered the call after Pearl. Not sure what it is, but I love the bold design and of course you know I dig maps :)

Glad you like the old pictures, that old book of photographs is my most treasured possession. It was in my aunt Jill's care for a long time, and then handed down to me a little while back, since she new I had an interest in the history. Unfortunately my grandparents passed when I was very young, so I never got the chance to talk to them about it... But I do take some comfort in knowing, that amidst all the horrors of war, love still managed to prevail somehow. There is this one pocket photo of Dottie that he carried with him, at Roi-Namur, Saipan, and Tarawa (and wherever else the 4th division ended up) with the words "Why we fight" written on the back in his hand. I love that.

Whenever I hear those old songs by Vera Lynn or other tunes from the era, I get kind of emotional and sentimentally romantic.

Hey speaking of old tunes from the time, here's one I truly love that you may know... It's the best version of this song ever! This woman's voice was an absolute perfect dream...

Doreen Villiers 1942-4, a beauty rare!

pps. one more set of the old timers, because it cracks me up haha

These photos of them together (above, and below) were taken by my grandpa's buddy Bill, I think my grandparents made it to send home to their parents. May have been during, or right after when they were in Maui? I don't know anything about photographer Bill, if he was lost or made it through, where he went, or what else he may have photographed, but he is a hero to me as well, for preserving these pictures of my grandparents in love. I get a kick out of the captions too, which are Dot's...

"Knowledge." :)

best to you all, truly
J
