Gibraltar

With the new air and naval bases is there really a need for Gibraltar to be territory in it's own right?

Make it a licensed UK naval base in the territory of Southern Spain.

In order to capture it, therefore, the Axis has to capture Spain with all the political implications of this.

The base can still be bombed without violating Spanish neutrality.

Similarly Hong Kong should be a UK base in the Chinese tt of Canton/Kwangtung

Hmm... Gibraltar IS very small, so that might work.

But Hong Kong and Kowloon are larger and had a real garrison. It was c.1,000 square kilometres, while Iwo Jima is 8 square miles. Both were strategically vital.

Not sure about this.

One could also look at the facts:

Gibraltar was captured by the British and Dutch during the War of Spanish Succession, and Hong Kong was a historically important trading port for the British prior to, during, and after the Opium Wars against China. Both territories were ceded by their original owners to the British "in perpetuity" after those respective conflicts, so they were not only British spoils of war, but would legally remain British for all of time. So, they're British, not parts of Spain or China.

What I don't get is why Europe/Global 1940 doesn't include the airstrip that was made in Gibraltar prior to the fall of France. I guess because it was enlarged in '41 that Larry decided the pre-expansion hard-top didn't constitute his vision of a proper Air Base.
