Submarine duels

Post by Piper909 » Sat Dec 04, 2010 3:01 pm

Can someone clarify the situation viz-a-viz submarines vs. submarines?

In a situation where only hostile submarines are in a sea zone, do both attacker and defender get a "surprise attack" on each other (simultaneous), using their respective attack or defence values? Or does only the attacking sub have the ability to make a surprise attack against an opposing sub?

Can the defending sub merely submerge rather than engage in the combat, before any surprise attack?

Every combat round, could the situation change, with one or the other submarines submerging?

Both attacking and defending subs get a Surprise Strike if there are no opposing destroyers, so if there are no destroyers on either side, attacking and defending subs fire at the same time. Subs submerge instead of firing, so either sub could submerge before the other fires, in any round of combat.

So if a sub has opening fire step, is that its only attack, or does it fire upon targets in both opening fire and regular combat. Also, what are the rules with subs vs. aircraft?

If its just subs battling subs then there is no general combat step. After they both surprise attack and nobody has won, then they go another round of either surprise attack or submerge.

I don't think subs can ever hit airplanes. And airplanes can only hit subs if they have a friendly destroyer present.

Subs either get a Surprise Strike or fire along with the other units, never both.
