Hostages

When someone captures a general in combat, can they sell it to any player? Or must they sell it only to the player it belongs to?

I would say that you can only sell it to the player it belongs to, based on the following quote from page 4 (under Money (Talents)):
You can also use your tribute for ransom payments if one or more of your Generals are captured.
I don't see anywhere else in the rules where it mentions the exchange of money between players, so I would say that you can't "buy" another player's captured generals.

Well the rules don't cover the question...
Designer's intent: Yes. You can sell a hostage to someone other than the controlling player. A hostage is a “commodity”, if it has value and will help interaction between players, it’s a good thing in the game. Thus it is permitted. Do I hear a bid…? 100 talents, do I hear 125….?

Larry,

Thanks for the reply. It was debate we had on Saturday. I was willing to buy a general from a player that was not my general. I wanted this because my rival would be weaker and I then had some leverage on him.

I noticed the rules were vague on the issue, I was thinking outside the box.

Looks like one for the FAQ!
